Size: 24" x 60”
Materials: aluminum, neon light, industrial wool, electricity
Technique: knitted construction
A simple knitted construction is a series of interlocking loops, which depend on one another for its strength and integrity. If one loop fails, the structure is weakened. When a yarn breaks a hole forms. In order to repair the hole, a single strand is required to stretch across the gap to connect with the other broken end.
These weaknesses or detachments in our bodies are repaired by blood flow and the creation of new tissue, and in our families, communities and the larger world; breaks are repaired with communication, compassion and patience.
In this work, light repairs the lost connection.
From chaos to order to repair and connection, this is the process of healing.
Process: This work has its roots in my gut.
I am 58 years old.
Gone are the days of attending all my friends weddings, mine and their childrens' first birthdays, graduation parties, weddings.
Now my friends are grandparents!
They are falling unexplainably,
and falling ill or weak,
experiencing the inevitable consequences of their habits, or lack of habits.
We mourn our empty nest,
we mourn for our parents.
We feel adrift.
Our anchors are gone.
We feel our own bodies changing without our permission.
We feel the world spinning faster around us.
There just seems to be more holes,
I learned that without connection things die.
My mother-in-law's leg didn't have blood flow.
At 95 years old, it was amputated.
Life had made her tough.
She completely accepted it.
She learned to walk on a prosthetic!
