Nazaal Shiyam — Rock

Rock

some days
I am a rock

I know this before I open my eyes

I am
the vortex in a whirlpool
I am
immovable and immutable

like the numbers on a dial
like the hotness of heat
like the brightness of light
like the whiteness of white

when I move, I don’t move
I stay still
and
the universe turns
this way and that way
like a rubik’s cube

the formulae of physical laws
solve obstacles in my path
navigating
not me
instead
navigating
everything else

if it didn't
I would have to take the shortest path
from
here to there

this means
I will have to move
through
cars and motorcycles
buildings and people
through trees and mountains
I will have to move over
water and fire and light and space

we both know this
is impossible

for if this happened
it will break
either
the universe or I
and
today
it won’t be me

the wake of my trajectory
will leave reality
pushed to the sides
on edges of ridges
of
a line
drawn
with the finger
of a child
playing in sand
and
just as carelessly

we can’t have that, can we?

So I close my eyes and wait
until
where I want to go is right where
I am

I hold my breath
for
I’m certain
everything
will be torn into pieces
If I sneeze
